The Compound Group is led by Warren Weeks. He is a results-oriented
executive serving the investment community and high-impact technology businesses. Warren is an industry expert in gallium nitride (GaN) epitaxy, metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOVCD)
and light-emitting diode (LED) manufacturing. He began his career in 1992 at North Carolina State University
(NC State) developing MOCVD of GaN and related compounds (III-Nitrides). He pioneered the use of high-temperature
buffer layers of aluminum nitride (AlN) for GaN on silicon carbide (SiC), contrary to conventional buffer schemes of sapphire.
He is a technical reviewer to the US Department of Energy for its solid-state lighting (SSL) and GaN-on-silicon
power electronic initiatives and is considered a GaN technology expert based on nearly 20 years experience in the industry.
He began his career at Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE), a leader in the SSL revolution, developing
state-of-the-art blue and green LEDs. He is credited with co-producing the first solid-state blue laser in the United
States. Similar lasers are used in today’s Blu-Ray players. He co-founded Nitronex
Corporation, a high-tech company currently manufacturing radio-frequency (RF) GaN-on-silicon semiconductor devices.
At Nitronex, he led the development of the industry’s first blue LEDs and GaN HEMTs on ordinary silicon wafers.
He served on the executive startup team at INTRINSIC Semiconductor Corporation, an advanced materials company that
was acquired by Cree in 2006. Warren also was recruited as a key member of the startup team at SC
Launch, serving as its Technology Director performing business and technical due diligence on aspiring high-tech startup companies.
Most recently, he was on the executive management team of Selah Technologies, a biotechnology-focused nanotechnology
company, which was acquired by Lab21, Ltd in 2009. Since 2002, Warren has served on the Board of Directors
of Permlight Products, a private CA-based developer of innovative SSL systems.
He is an inventor on numerous US and foreign patents related to GaN, LED device design and other microelectronic
devices. He has co-authored numerous scientific, peer-reviewed articles related to compound semiconductors.
Warren is currently a confidential consultant
for expert witness testimony involving GaN devices. Although new to the courtroom, Warren has been involved as a company executive
on various legal actions related to intellectual property, including lawsuits, cross-licensing agreements, cease and desist
orders and ordinary patent prosecution. Warren holds a BS degree in Ceramic Engineering from Clemson
University and a MS degree from NC State in Materials Science & Engineering. He graduated summa
cum laude with a 4.0 GPA from Clemson and NC State.
His bold style and hands-on
experience building several high growth technology companies puts Warren in an ideal position to help improve and advance
your business. To learn how the Compound Group can help your business, please contact Warren.
